G’day guys my name is Jay, l’ve been playing tennis since l was 10 years old, after my parents encouraged me to give it a go as l’ve always loved playing different sports. As a kid l could never just sit at home and play lego or watch a movie. l always wanted to be doing something and be active, l’ve played AFL, soccer, cricket, basketball, Oztag, swimming and surfing to just name a few. What always stood out to me in tennis is it’s a game that’s both individual and team based, which is quite unique compared to most sports.
My first lesson of coaching was at Nathan’s Tennis back in 2015 where l did group lessons and holiday camps. l continued to get coaching with Nathan up until the end of 2022 after finishing high school. Getting private lessons was not only helpful for my tennis but was also such a blast, to this date my favourite game to play is ‘the game of 25.’ During July of 2022 l had also started coaching tennis where l was doing private, semi-private, group and school lessons. Since starting as a coach l’ve been coaching 4 days a week whilst also completing a bachelor of Civil Engineering at UTS.
I played for Newington College GPS 2nds team and received Most Valuable Player for the season. During my last two years of high school l was training 5.5 hours a week plus 5 hours on Saturday for Newington. So from where l started to where l am now l sure did love tennis. I also played in a number of tournaments including Wollongong, Cessnock and Central coast.
What l love about coaching is fostering students growth, not only just their technical form but also their mental capabilities during a match. What l learnt from GPS tennis is everyone has great technical form but you need to know where to play the ball at the right time targeting your opponents weaker shot. The feeling when your student has that lightbulb moment above their head and starts hitting the ball like you’ve never seen before makes everything worth it.
